I’m sharing my story as I fight to break free of my second abusive marriage. The addition of children to the mix and more subtle forms of abuse have down a long path of emotional and physical deterioration to the point I have no other choice but to save myself for the sake of our children.
When I left my first abusive husband in 2011, I hadn’t experienced motherhood yet. He was a police officer, physically abusive to our animals, and outright aggressive with me. I stayed with him just over two years until the day I could no longer go back to him again. When I left that day, I feared for my life; I was afraid I might get shot, but since it was only me, I drove as fast as I could and never looked back.
When I asked my second abusive husband to leave in February 2023, now a mother of twin five year olds, the experience was far more terrifying than the first.
